Identifying the right machinery for applying compost mulch to rows of fruit trees to boost yields has become easier, thanks to a new guide from WRAP (Waste & Resources Action Programme). The guide, which will be launched on 22 July at Fruit Focus on WRAP’s stand number 54, is designed to help growers tackle the challenge of spreading compost mulch evenly in confined areas without damaging trees or crops. It gives practical tips on everything from application rates and timings and selecting the right hopper, to finding machinery suppliers. The guide follows a number of scientific trials that have been conducted on compost use in the South-East of England, including one on apple trees in Kent, where yields increased by nearly 50 per cent and profits were significantly boosted. Such results have encouraged the increasing use of compost in the area. Dr David Tompkins, Agricultural Specialist for WRAP, said: “Applying compost as a mulch to newly planted orchards does not present any particular challenges. However, once the trees have become established, the spacing of the rows and size of the trees can cause problems. “We aim to help growers overcome such problems by helping them choose the right type of machinery and understand how other issues such as the grade of compost and rate of application will affect their success.” Experts on compost will be available on the WRAP stand to discuss the recommendations of the guide and talk to growers about the benefits of using quality compost. The guide can be downloaded after July 22 via the WRAP website -www.wrap.org.uk/composting/agriculture |
